KIST is a global research institute and a leader among peer institutions in Korea in supporting innovative international programs, institutes, and initiatives, and working directly with international communities, countries, and partner institutions.

KIST currently maintains a variety of science and technology cooperation agreements with over 80 institutes around the world, including those in the U.S., Japan and Germany. This extensive network allows KIST to actively pursue joint international research projects, host international joint conferences, exchange researchers, and launch other related programs.

With the 1996 establishment of KIST Europe in Saarbrucken, Germany, KIST pushed forth its initiative for S&T globalization via penetration into R&D source countries. KIST Europe has since become KIST's research base in the EU community, carrying out cutting-edge core technology research operations, thus facilitating multilateral S&T cooperation among Korea and European countries. KIST also established the Indo-Korea Science and Technology Center to utilize India's abundant S&T potential and lay the groundwork for trade cooperation with one of the largest markets in the world.

Other international activities include the transfer of KIST’s knowledge and available technologies to developing counties for their respective country’s sustainable growth, offering a graduate program to prospective scientists and engineers through the International R&D Academy, and the implementation of campus globalization initiatives to create a research environment that is attractive to scientists and students from abroad.
