The Center for Neural Science (CNS) uses mouse models to reveal the neural mechanisms of various cognitive functions and to identify drug targets for treating or alleviating the symptoms of related diseases. Such cognitive functions include sensation/perception (especially pain), attention/learning/memory, emotion/motivation, reward/addiction, sleep/arousal and consciousness. The CNS is also interested in related diseases such as epilepsy, learning disabilities, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), and mental disorders like schizophrenia.
CNS is devoted to the education and development of Korean Neuroscience by being a core graduate program of the University of Science and Technology, backed by 22 research institutes funded by the Korean government.
Acknowledging CNS's contribution to Korean Science in general, KIST appointed the CNS as the first ¡°Center of Excellence¡± in 2005. The CNS also produced the first National Honor Scientist, Dr. Hee-Sup Shin, in 2006.
