There have been many economic changes by the turn of the 21th century, which include: changes in the ubiquitous society, changes in technology as represented by digital convergence, and a paradigm shift in the global economy from a knowledge-based economy to a creative economy. Many changes are occurring and more changes are expected. In anticipation to these changes,

the Robotics/Systems Division has a vision to improve the quality of life by using the robot system technology and IT, with a goal to secure fundamental core technologies for the creation of new growth engines, by achieving a 10% R&D productivity index in 2011. Our division provides research in the following areas: cognitive robotics and intelligence/interaction, imaging media, photonics/sensor system, and energy mechanics.
These research areas belong to a valuable chain of research composed of service-infra-system devices. Ultimately, we have paved the way for future services such as new imaging media services in the digital life age and robots that provide life-support services. To have these services available, we have developed infra technologies such as the next generational optical communication technologies and energy systems and conducted creative research in future system devices such as photonic sensors and micro actuators, cognitive-bio robots, field robots, intelligent response spaces, interactive virtual media, sensor networks, micro power systems, etc. We are thereby contributing to the creation of the nation¡¯s new growth engines.
