KIST Researcher Duk-Rok Suh Receives 26th Songgok Science and Technology Award
KIST (President: Seok-Jin Yoon) announced that Dr. Duk-Rok Suh, a Principal Researcher in KIST's Technology Policy Research Institute, has been selected as the winner in the “Science and Technology Policy” category for the 26th Songgok Science and Technology Awards. Dr. Suh was awarded a prize of 20 million won at the 58th KIST Anniversary Ceremony, which was held at the KIST headquarters in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, on February 7, 2024.
The Songgok Science and Technology Awards were established in 1999 to honor the achievements of Dr. Choi Hyung-Seop, the first President of KIST and former Minister of Science and Technology. They aim to identify and award scientists who have made significant contributions to the advancement of national science and technology and the industrial economy by developing new world-class materials or proposing measures for academic research and research management related to national science and technology policies.
Dr. Suh is an expert in R&D planning and policy and has contributed to KIST's ascent as a leading research institution as well as the development of national science and technology policy and technology funding over the past 14 years through on-site R&D policy formulation. In particular, he has presented management innovation models for participating institutions through innovative evaluation system reforms focused on excellence, the establishment of industry-academia-research collaboration systems and strategic large-scale project planning, and the planning and operation of the Hongneung Forum, which laid the groundwork for building an innovation cluster in the Hongneung area. He has also contributed to the establishment of the Green Technology Center (currently the National Institute of Green Technology), provided support for the establishment of the Presidential Advisory Report on Bio-Regulation Reform, supported the establishment of national convergence R&D policies, provided advice on R&D feasibility studies and comprehensive evaluation committee activities, and contributed to on-site-oriented national R&D policy formulation. In recognition of his achievements, he was selected as a winner of the 26th Songgok Science and Technology Awards.
Dr. Suh commented, "As a policy researcher who has been pondering innovative policies in the field, it is a great honor to receive the Songgok Science and Technology Award. In particular, the significance and weight of receiving this award which honors Dr. Choi Hyung-Seop, the first President of KIST, are exceptional. Just as it was a challenge for Dr. Choi to lay the foundation for what KIST would come to represent 58 years ago, the current challenge is for our science and technology community to rapidly transition into a leading R&D system, which can only be achieved when research, administration, and policy come together. I will continue to listen to the voices of researchers in the field and pursue R&D policies based on data and analysis."
