KIST & Gangwon Province Sign MOU to Create Bio-Specialized Complex and Conduct Technology Exchanges
On March 6, 2024, KIST (President: Seok-Jin Yoon) and Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor: Jin-Tae Kim) held an MOU signing ceremony at the Gangwon Provincial Office in Chuncheon to create the Gangwon Bio National High-Tech Strategic Industry Specialized Complex and conduct technology exchanges.
Through the MOU, the two organizations will seek to foster interest in Gangwon Province’s designation for the “National High-Tech Strategic Industry Specialized Bio Complex” program being promoted by the government, as well as pursue cooperation on talent exchanges, joint research, and corporate support.
KIST is a government-funded research institute that has been devoted to research for the development of national science and technology over the past 58 years since its establishment in 1966. It has a leading R&D system for research in advanced science and technology fields such as bio/medical convergence, brain science, next-generation semiconductors, AI robotics, and climate and environmental science. In particular, the KIST Gangneung Institute of Natural Products, Korea's only national research institute dedicated to natural products research, was established in Gangneung in 2003, and has contributed greatly to the development of Gangwon Province's natural products bio industry, assisting the region with receiving orders for government-funded projects and seeking designation as a candidate site for a national bio industrial complex.
Through this MOU, Gangwon Province has completed preparations to effectively create the Gangwon Bio National High-Tech Strategic Industrial Complex by securing a collaborative network with highly talented research personnel in the metropolitan area. Previously, on February 20, a human resources training cooperation agreement was signed with major universities and institutions in Gangwon Province to solidify regional solidarity.
KIST President Seok-Jin Yoon commented, “KIST and Gangwon Province have been carrying out a project together to standardize the life cycle of natural materials since November of last year,” and added, “Based on this partnership, we will strive for Gangwon Province to become the center of the domestic high-tech bio industry.”
Gangwon Province Governor Jin-Tae Kim stated, “We are anticipating the synergy created by the robust bio-health research and industrialization infrastructure that Gangwon Province has been building and KIST’s talented research personnel,” adding, “With today’s agreement as a starting point, we will surely succeed in attracting specialized complexes such as this to Gangwon Province and achieve great results with KIST.”
